Linking a Pregnancy Diet to Childhood Obesity

We’ve all heard that you are what you eat. Now a recent study suggests that you might also be what your mother ate. Researchers in Great Britain, New Zealand and Singapore have concluded that a pregnant mother’s diet can influence whether her child will be obese. Published in the magazine Diabetes, the study found that a pregnant woman’s diet can spur DNA changes that manifest in a child’s obesity six to nine years after birth. Such extra weight, of course, can contribute to diabetes, heart disease and a host of other health problems.
